SQM participates in job placement activity for women in mining in Iquique

17/Aug/2023

After the successful second version held in Antofagasta, this Thursday, August 17, Talento Mujer was repeated in Iquique to celebrate a new space for STEM development alongside women from the region. The event was a joint effort by REDEG, SQM and its sponsors, the Ministry of Mining and the Ministry of Women and Gender Equality.

Held at the Gavina Hotel, the event seeks to motivate new generations to learn about the opportunities that SQM offers in the mining industry. It is targeted towards seventh to twelfth-grade students from technical schools and university students nearing graduation.

This initiative organizes different activities to connect potential young talent in the region with opportunities for inclusion and development in the industry. Lilian Denham, Executive Director of REDEG, comments that: “We have seen how the mining industry has committed to the cultural transformation of both Chile and the region in terms of diversity and inclusion. In that sense, Talento Mujer is an innovative solution that helps increase the number of women employed by the industry, from early stages, where girls and young women need to be exposed to the STEM world to give them access to new job opportunities and development in the future.”

Meanwhile, Bárbara Blümel, Deputy Manager of Talent Attraction and Diversity at SQM, the company in charge of this initiative, affirms that: “For SQM, increasing female participation, diversity and inclusion within the company is one of the challenges that we have decided to take on in the coming years. Talento Mujer aims to provide tools and opportunities for women of different ages, backgrounds and specialties to enter the mining industry. It does this by equipping them with new knowledge, sharing other women’s testimonials and success stories and arranging mentoring from women who have not only developed their careers in the industry but have played an important role in the sector’s growth. At SQM, we are clearly convinced that a sustained increase in the number of female employees involves balancing work, family and personal life, in order to retain female employees for longer and help them develop their careers, as well as to generate opportunities for them to reach management and decision-making positions.”

Talento Mujer 2023 consists of a seminar featuring two presentations, a robotics workshop and a group mentoring session for girls and young talents in the mining industry.
