In keeping with its commitment to sustainability and excellence, SQM’s Iodine and Plant Nutrition Division successfully completed the ISO 50001:2018 External Follow-Up Audit at its Coya Sur plants and for the mining operation and leaching processes at Nueva Victoria—a testament to its compliance with the highest international energy management standards.

Adrián Becerra, an Engineer from the Sustainability area, remarked: “This achievement is the result of the collective effort by the work teams. They have played a vital role in implementing the company’s certification plan, which is part of a sustainability strategy with a long-term vision.”

Daniela López, a Sustainability team member, added: “ISO 50001:2018 certification shows that beyond just coexisting, sustainability and excellence can mutually enhance each other. Incorporating energy efficiency into operations reduces the environmental footprint and positions the organization as an example to the industrial and mining sectors.”

One outstanding milestone in this process is the recognition of the Nueva Victoria Iodine Plant as the first in the world to achieve ISO 50001:2018 certification in the iodine production category. It reaffirms SQM’s ability to incorporate sustainable, optimized practices in the mining and chemical industry, further consolidating its sustainability leadership.

The impact of ISO 50001:2018 certification

ISO 50001:2018 establishes a management system focused on improving energy performance, optimizing resource consumption and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. By implementing it, SQM’s Iodine and Plant Nutrition Division strengthens its capacity to operate efficiently and sustainably in alignment with the expectations of its customers, employees and communities.

SQM’s Iodine and Plant Nutrition Division continues to “develop unique capabilities that transform resources into life and progress.” Tying its strategy to international standards ensures each action generates a positive, sustainable environmental impact.
