Inclusive flavors: Pizza masterclass united young people with disabilities and authorities in Antofagasta

12/Dec/2024

The day of inclusion was attended by local authorities, teams from SQM Iodine Plant Nutrition and young people with intellectual disabilities.

As part of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, SQM Iodine Plant Nutrition joined forces with Fundación Miradas Compartidas to hold a “Pizza Masterclass” at the Huanchaca Ruins in Antofagasta, generating social integration through fun.

More than 50 duos made up of various local officials, employees of SQM Iodine Plant Nutrition and young people with disabilities from Miradas Compartidas Antofagasta, enjoyed the culinary activity, collaborating to create pizzas of different flavors.

Pablo Pisani, Community Affairs Manager for SQM Iodine Plant Nutrition, commented: “The year 2024 has been very powerful because, after 7 years partnering with Miradas Compartidas, we continue to generate value, inclusion and development opportunities for people with disabilities in various communities and towns in the Antofagasta and Tarapacá regions, so this initiative is a tremendous way to wrap up the year that gives us an important boost to continue making progress together in 2025.”

The event was part of the foundation’s program of inclusive social and athletic experiences to bring together people with and without disabilities.

For Felipe Olavarría, Director of Miradas Compartidas, this is a key milestone for the end of the year. “For us these types of initiatives are key to reinforce the commitment that exists towards people with disabilities, the public-private commitment, to generate a fairer and more inclusive society,” he said.

TRACK RECORD OF INCLUSION

The event had multiple protagonists who undoubtedly demonstrated that inclusion crosses all barriers. One example was masterclass participant Gabriela Isidora Muñoz, who delighted everyone present with her enthusiasm during the experience: “My dad taught me (how to make pizza), how to put cheese, ham and how to heat it in two minutes, even five,” said the Miradas Compartidas member.

Ricardo Díaz, Governor of Antofagasta, was emphatic that inclusiveness must be lived on a daily basis. “I applaud this integration-generating initiative, which reminds us that we all play a part in inclusion, from a different, practical perspective,” he emphasized.

Miradas Compartidas and SQM Iodine Plant Nutrition celebrated seven years of partnership, impacting more than 1,500 individuals with disabilities, most from vulnerable backgrounds, through their recreational and job inclusion programs in different parts of Chile, with a particularly strong presence in the north.
