“FICIQQ+ FÚTBOL” SHOWS TWO FREE MOVIES IN IQUIQUE NEIGHBORHOODS

After screening two films in different parts of the city, the Iquique International Film Festival (FICIQQ) is now touring the rest of the region to continue celebrating this milestone.

“FICIQQ+ FÚTBOL” is an opportunity for the entire family to enjoy two audiovisual works about soccer. The first is “El niño Tocopilla,” a documentary about a trip by two Tocopilla residents to watch Alexis Sánchez’s match in Milan. The second, “Estrellas del Desierto,” is an award-winning short filmed in the Tarapacá Region by local director Katherina Harder. This piece tells the story of Antay, a 12-year-old boy from the community of Pachica who watches his town begin to disappear. He and his friends form a small soccer team to make the most of the last rays of sunshine, fragments of their childhood and the bonds of those who still resist.

The traveling films were shown on the “Remodelación el Morro” neighborhood council field on August 10, followed by the Caupolicán neighborhood council field on Saturday, August 17. The tour will end on the 31st of this month at Villa O’Higgins square (Avda. Salvador Allende with Tomás Bonilla) at 6:30 p.m. Each showing included surprises for children in attendance.

“We are excited to reach out to the neighborhoods again. We have been doing these neighborhood cinema activities for more than six years and we believe it is a very important opportunity to bring neighbors closer to film, to promote the event we will be doing in December, and above all, to expose the community to affordable culture,” commented Elliot Morfi, executive producer of Volcánica Films.

“FICIQQ + FÚTBOL” is one of the activities to commemorate the 15th anniversary of FICIQQ. It is supported by SQM Iodine Plant Nutrition, in partnership with the Tocopilla Soccer Film Festival, the Cultural Donations Law and the Cultural Corporation of the Chilean Chamber of Construction, and produced by Volcánica Films.

Pablo Pisani, Corporate Affairs Manager for SQM Iodine Plant Nutrition, highlighted the importance of bringing this art form to the city’s neighborhoods, adding that “in recent years we have witnessed how soccer moves and transforms lives. Film is a platform for transmitting deep emotions and making children and young people come alive. Our company is pleased to support this tremendous initiative, which is now in its 15th year.”

The Iquique International Film Festival has a vast track record. Founded in 2009, it is celebrating its 15th anniversary in 2024. Throughout the years, it has presented several regional, national and international film projects free of charge for local audiences. It also features a competition of national and international shorts and feature films that gives the community access to other visions by renowned directors from Chile and around the world.

FICIQQ15 has invited filmmakers and audiovisual artists to submit works in the December film contest’s four categories: International Feature Film ‘Film of Extremes,’ National Feature Film, International Short Film and Northern Chile Regional Short Film. The rules are available on the website www.festivalcineiquique.cl and applications are being accepted until Monday, September 30, through Festhome.
