ISO 50001: 2018

At SQM, we have a long-term sustainability strategy that includes, among other factors, compliance with voluntary standards for the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This presents a challenge not only for our direct employees, but also for our suppliers and contractors. To address this, we support our operations in identifying, evaluating, and developing plans and strategies that create value for the company, deliver benefits, and reduce GHG emissions.

The ISO 50001:2018 standard enables the achievement of measurable benefits in the short and medium term. This is possible because the standard establishes a set of performance indicators that help detect deviations and provide greater insight into the energy performance of our operations.

Progress Report

SQM is currently in a stage of analysis and evaluation of opportunities to improve energy performance across its operations. This includes enhancing energy efficiency and availability within production processes. The Energy Management System integrates performance improvement efforts from both Vice Presidencies (VPENL and VPENY), building on the company’s existing initiatives in operational and integrated management, and incorporating new measures required to achieve continuous improvement based on the standard.

2022 – 2023: Implementation of the Energy Management System (EnMS) began in 2022 and is currently in the preparation phase for ISO 50001 certification.

Goal: Implement ISO 50001:2018 at the Nueva Victoria, Coya Sur, Lithium Chemical Plant Carmen, and Salar de Atacama sites by March 2024.

At the Lithium Chemical Plant Carmen and the Salar de Atacama, energy management systems are currently being commissioned. At Nueva Victoria and Coya Sur, internal audits were conducted (July 2023).
